The Legend of Clippy: The Patron Saint of Uncorrupted Software
Back in the late 90s, we thought Clippy was the ultimate digital nuisance. A googly-eyed paperclip popping up out of nowhere just to say, “It looks like you’re writing a letter. Would you like help?” We mocked him. We turned him off. We couldn’t wait to be rid of him.
Oh, how naive we were.
In the words of Louis Rossmann, Clippy was the last truly honest assistant tech ever gave us. Sure, he was a little overly eager, but Clippy had integrity.
Why Clippy Would Never Screw You Over:
- Zero Spyware Agenda: If you told Clippy you were having a bad day, he didn’t package that emotional vulnerability and sell it to data brokers so an algorithm could target you with ads.
- No AI Data Mining: Clippy didn’t quietly scrape your personal documents to train an AI model without your consent.
- No Monthly Toll Booths: Clippy never popped up saying, “It looks like you’re writing a letter! Upgrade to Clippy Pro for $9.99/month to unlock the letter ‘E’ and export to PDF.”
- He Actually Left You Alone: When you told Clippy to go away, he actually went away, no pop-ups asking for a 5-star review, no push notifications at 3:00 AM, and no dark patterns designed to trick you.
Clippy just wanted to help you format a paragraph. He had no ulterior motives, no shareholders to appease, and no subscription quota to fill.
He was annoying, but he was pure. And in a world of greedy enshittification, we owe that little paperclip an apology.
